Change Your Words – Change Your World
I continue to be amazed by the fear of networking so many people share. That’s why these few thoughts this week may be game changers for you!
While many people think of networking events from a negative viewpoint, why not focus on the positive instead? Numerous famous people have used this quote to help others,“Change your words, change your world.” And its true, so give your brain a break this week!
Every room full of unknown people is just a blank “relationship canvas.” It is a world of new opportunities to meet new people, make new friends to make, and get more practiced in sharing what you do.
It is simply a matter of a mental mind shift from reframing fear and reluctance to confidence and opportunity. Let’s be real—no one is ever going to laugh at you at one of these events(despite how much your subconscious wants to convince you otherwise). Change the self-talk you have from negative to positive. After all,…a networking event is not a root canal, IRS audit, or visit from your in-laws. So, adjust your mindset and tell yourself you will have fun. And guess what? With that reframing of your self-talk, you will have a better experience!
So, here are three quick tips to help you succeed in a room full of strangers:
Tip 1: Most People Suffer from “Anthropophobia”
Simply put, this “fifty cent word’ means the fear of people. We all, on some level, have a nervous feeling when about to meet new people. You are not alone in feeling queasy, anxious, or uncertain. In other words—it’s not you! It’s most people who feel this way.
Tip 2: Smile
Show those pearly whites because people are naturally attracted to people who smile brightly. A recent study reported that that 69% of people preferred a smiling face not wearing makeup to a non-smiling, makeup-wearing face! And smiles are contagious as people will smile back at you. A Swedish university study concluded that when you smile at people who frown, they naturally begin to smile.
With a smile, you can actually transform your mood and health. It is simply impossible to be down or nervous if you have a great smile! (Also, when making those phone calls you dread try smiling…you will achieve better results and come across as a really positive person because, a smile does translate over the phone.) Smiling relaxes you, boosts your immune system, and relieves stress.
Want to attract people to you? Your smile can be seen and recognized from over 300 feet. A smiling, happy person is a networking magnet.
Tip 3: Realize Your Value
One of the most important things to remember is the inherent value you bring to your business, work, family, and world. You are a one -of-a kind original made by God. And as such, you are unique and have wonderful things to offer others.
If you don’t believe in yourself others won’t either. So, shine up your self-confidence, practice what you want to share with others, and WOW that room!
