Polish Your Look to Boost Your Career
While writing this newsletter, a loud clanging and banging announced the arrival of the lawn guys to make our yard look “mulch better.” Just like our tired looking yard, maybe you could use some image enhancement for a new season?
As a trainer who presents workshops on professionalism and public speaking, I know that 93% of communication is non-verbal. Before you open your mouth, people will automatically judge you. Now isn’t that scary? But it is true! It is essential to understand that perception creates reality because what people perceive about you becomes their reality.
Women are naturally fashion conscious and would never leave home without being well dressed, their hair perfectly coiffed, and with matching jewelry. But guys don’t come close to dressing for success as women do. So, this month’s column is addressed to men.
Your most powerful resume is not on paper, but in the mirror. Therefore, you should dress for the life and job you want. As Shark Tank guru Daymond John says, “Good grooming is integral, and impeccable style is a must.” Michael Cain writes, “A man should dress in a way that you don’t notice. He looks good and you don’t know why.” Lastly, actor Shawn Ashmore shares this key thought, “Style is a reflection of your attitude and your personality.”
So, here are 7 key tips to help you truly shine:
- Get a Professional Haircut.
I used to like just getting a haircut that was quick and inexpensive. But, as my wife said, “You get what you pay for.” Now, I have a personal barber, Justin, at the Max Experience. He does a fantastic job, and my hair never looked better! - Wear Quality Shoes.
Good shoes are worth every bit of what they cost. While you can buy less expensive shoes, your sore feet will quickly inform you when you made a poor purchase. Keep your shoes well-polished and use heel dressing to keep them looking sharp. - Ditch the Polo Shirt.
Unless you are mandated by your company, skip this shirt. Unless you are on the golf course or headed to an outdoor, after-hours event, this shirt is not appropriate for business. It sends an all too casual message that you don’t take your business seriously. If you do, however, choose to wear one, buy top quality shirts. - Dress with Quality.
If you want to be promoted, dress for the position you’d like to land. Top quality clothes last longer, look fantastic, and make you feel great. When wearing high quality clothes, you communicate an unspoken message that everything you do is high quality. So, if you want to earn more, work on being perceived at a higher level. - Find Your Style.
Find your style and where you can buy what you need when you need to augment your wardrobe. Personally, I love shopping at Dillard’s. Their Roundtree and Yorke Gold Label Shirts and Travel Smart pants are comfortable and look great. No matter what you wear, keep your clothes clean and well-pressed. (Here’s another great fashion tip—Dillard’s has an outlet store in Asheville, NC that’s well worth the drive!!) - Wear Great Accessories.
The first accessory to understand is facial hair. If you sport a beard or mustache, keep it trimmed so you look sharp. If possible, avoid the scraggly “need a shave” look. Every man should own several classic belts (black and brown) and a nice watch or two. If you wear ties, be sure the tip touches your belt buckle. If you are tall, buy extra-long ties. - Drive a Clean Car.
It is important that your car is clean and neat. You never know when you may pull up to a client’s office if they may judge you by the exterior of your car. If your car is always clean and orderly, you’ll never be afraid to have a client ride with you.
Here’s a great 5-minute video that every man who wants to improve his image, income, and life should watch:
Looking sharp is simply about conveying the right message before you even say a word. Your appearance impacts your confidence and how others view you. Those two things can open or close doors to you personally and professionally. Investing in your appearance is investing in your future. So, look in the mirror. Does what you see work for you or against you? The choice is yours…so make it count!
